Everything paranormal is not negative. Not all spirits or lost souls out there want to hurt you or are driven to do harm. I want to relate one of the positive experiences that I had.

Over 10 years ago I was posted in North Bengal for some years and frequently travelled between Siliguri, Sikkim, Darjeeling and Bhutan. Most of the roads there are winding mountain roads with a rock face on one side and and abyss on the other. And there are hairpin curves every few metres where you can only see what’s ahead once you make the turn. Roads are something like this:

a winding mountain road

One day I was in Gangtok (the capital of Sikkim) for some work and got late. It was nearly 8 pm by the time I got to the share taxi stand and set off for Siliguri. Now, the taxi drivers here are experts on these roads and know every twist and turn blindfolded. So, they drive quite fast, even on these roads.

That day I was tired. On top of that it started raining. There were three other passengers in the car with me and all of them were salespeople like me - tired and eager to get back to Siliguri. So even with heavy rain and low visibility we started off.

The car was going pretty fast - around 40–45 km/h but the driver was in full control. Around an hour into our journey we were on a pretty lonely stretch of road and there was another turn coming up. As we made the turn, suddenly a man was there in the headlights standing in the middle of the road. The driver braked very hard skidding for some distance before coming to a stop. Even the engine stalled and the headlights went off. For half a minute we all sat in the dark horrified.

Then all of us scrambled out in the pouring rain to see if the car had hit someone. The driver managed to start the engine, and the headlights came on.

The road in front and behind us was completely empty. Just empty road, with rock face on one side and abyss on the other. There was nowhere that anyone could have run off in such little time. And now the best part.

As we were checking under the car and the road around, we heard a deep rumble. Around 200 metres ahead of us huge rocks started falling on the road. The heavy rain had triggered a landslide. In just a few minutes the road in front of us was gone. We just watched in stunned silence. The road ahead of us was now this:

a mountain road hit by a landslide

If we had not stopped, our car would have been on that exact stretch of road where the landslide happened, and we would have been dead.

The events of the past 5 minutes affected us so strongly that the strength in our legs just gave out and we all just sat down on the road in the pouring rain. I think all of us just sat there for 10–15 minutes staring at each other and at the road ahead. Then we got back in the car, turned around and went back to Gangtok.

I don’t know what was there on the road that night. A ghost, spirit or deity. Whatever it was, it meant us no harm and was there to save our lives.

I have a couple of other stories as well. Accounts that I have heard from other people.

Let me know if any of you have had similar experiences. Where a paranormal experience has helped you or saved your life.
